Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, is a notorious crime boss and a major adversary of Batman in DC Comics. He first appeared in Batman #386 (August 1985).

Born into a wealthy, yet cruel family with a business interest in cosmetics that ultimately ruins their finances and reputation, Sionis develops a deep resentment for Gotham's elite and a desire for control. When his parents die in a suspicious fire, he is left in charge of the Sionis cosmetic corporation. He makes poor business decisions and eventually finds himself reliant on Waynetech to save his business. Blaming Bruce Wayne and the rest of society, he becomes consumed by vengeance.

After a disfiguring accident in his cosmetic factory, Sionis carves a black mask from his parents ebony coffins to conceal his disfigured face. As Black Mask, he builds a reputation as a ruthless and sadistic criminal leader, specializing in torture and mind control. Black Mask is a skilled strategist with a vast criminal network and known for taking over the Gotham underworld.
